UKAMB is a registered charity and so, in accordance with Charity Commission requirements, has a board of Trustees. Since being established in 1997 the board’s Trustees have all been managers/co-ordinators/representatives of UK milk banks. In this way the board was able to manage the charity side of the organisation as well as make the decisions governing the promotion of milk banking, the training and education of milk bank staff and the availability of support materials and, until last year guidelines. Feedback from donors, parents and health professionals alike has always been positive and we feel we have made a significant difference to the state of milk banking in the UK and also further afield. However, our work (which is all done on a voluntary basis) has been limited by the financial resources (or lack of them) of UKAMB.
At the 2010 Annual General Meeting a momentous decision was taken that we hope will be of enormous benefit to the work we do and ultimately to the premature and sick infants and the donor mothers who we aim to serve. It was decided that the Board of Trustees would be enlarged and widened to hopefully incorporate non milk banking members who could bring additional and much needed experience and skills to the overall running of the charity. Like all charities we need fund raising expertise, we need financial know how and we need Trustees who can offer the much needed time that our milk banking Trustees do not always have as a result of their full time working commitments.

An Extraordinary General Meeting has been organised for Monday 31st January 2011 (for more details click here) at which the necessary changes to the UKAMB Constitution will be presented. We then hope to be able to quickly start to expand the Board of Trustees and to raise more funds to support the valuable and necessary work that UKAMB undertakes.
