Irvinestown Human Milk Bank is the only community based Milk Bank in the UK; it is run as part of the Western Health And Social Care Trust.
It started operating in August 2000 from Irvinestown Health Centre in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.
The bank is situated close to the border of Nothern Ireland and the Irish Republic, allowing easy movement of milk around the island.
The bank started to function as a response to a child in the Erne Hospital's Neo-natal unit who developed NEC and no Donor milk was available to a child on the Island of Ireland.
Milk is collected from Donors all over Ireland. The milk is then processed in accordance with UKAMB Guidelines and distributed to units throughout Ireland, providing very special help to babies in Neo-natal Units, cardiac surgery units, gut surgery units and to babies at home with specialist problems.
Then bank is really proud of the work of all their donors, who provide help to over 700 of the most vunerable babies every year.
